For this project, I wanted to explore and expand the tactility, the sensoriality of DuPont™ Corian® by creating a seating solution that would accommodate the current needs and behaviour of people, while balancing art, aesthetics and science. After reconsidering the relationship between humans and the objects upon which we sit – distilling down to the essential substance of a chair – I developed a new silhouette that challenges both the way a chair should look and how it should be used. Distinguished by three supporting stands, the unique shape offers the user more flexibility, inviting new and different sitting experiences. Driven by functionality, the “Verve” chair is shaped to give maximum ergonomic support, providing a smooth transition between user and the object. Design thick, sheet of DuPont™ Corian®, which provides the almost self-sustaining structure of the chair. The chair is stackable and can be made using different colours of DuPont™ Corian®.John Sebastian The “Verve” chair in DuPont™ Corian® designed by John Sebastian has been manufactured by PL Inventar company , based in Randers, Denmark, specialised in the fabrication of DuPont™ Corian®. "I first met John Sebastian , when we approached him for our “DuPont™ Corian®: 40 Years - 40 Designers” event at 2007 Milan week of design. He had never worked with Corian® before, he immediately accepted the challenge and designed one of the most elegant and original pieces of the whole exhibition: a light, gently-shaped, black and white fruit holster, alternating stripes of DuPont™ Corian® with void spaces. Since then, John Sebastian has been thinking extensively on DuPont™ Corian® and the solutions it could provide in furnishing. Recently we challenged him again, proposing him to think about DuPont™ Corian® for a chair, which is not an easy application. The design he developed – the Verve chair, made with a single sheet of DuPont™ Corian® - perfectly captures the versatility, the formability and the sensorial beauty of DuPont™ Corian®. The Verve chair is a truly remarkable Danish design...durable materials simply crave durable design...." says Helle Jensen, DuPont™ Corian®, country manager, Denmark. His holistic approach to design demonstrates a nuanced understanding of the historical and cultural context of human behaviour. John Sebastian’s work, which ranges from tableware and kitchen products to furniture, lighting, transport, electronics and appliances, reflects a disciplined balance between new technologies, ergonomics, and humanized aesthetics. He has been recognized with numerous international design awards and has worked for renowned companies in China, Europe, Korea, Japan and USABang & Olufsen, Fritz Hansen, Georg Jensen, Samsung Electronic, SONY, Gubi, Biomega, Holmegaard,Kundalini/ Troconi, Dupont Corian, Royal Copenhagen and Stelton, SONY. John SebastianBorn 1975, international breakthrough at the age of 25. This young designer’s talents are in great demand, and his uncompromising originality has earned him both national and international acclaim. John Sebastian has always gone his own way, and has never actually received formal training at a design college. He is completely self-taught, but that is no hindrance. His design is organic yet pure, trimmed and perhaps even complex, and because of this unique mix numerous design trophies adorn his desk. In fact, in 2001 his was named one of the worlds top 20 young designers by the design magazine Wallpaper. The Honey moon pendant lamp was designed by John Sebastian for Kundalini in Italy. He is currently a successful, visionary, human-oriented industrial designer. His holistic approach to design demonstrates a nuanced understanding of the historical and cultural context of human behavior. The Honeymoon pendant lamp is an exemplary pendant light and showcases some of his visionary and artistic skills. The Honey moon pendant series has a suspension lamp with has an opal mouth blown triplex glass diffuser. The fixture is in spun opaque white varnished metal. The pendant light is available in two sizes, and looks beautiful in any indoor setting. The pendant lamp is like a reflection of the moon on water, that you can bring home to experience forever. "The collaboration with creative minds has been and will always be very important for us, because it has contributed both to better understanding the possibilities of our materials and has given major inspiration to the whole industry. This innovative design of John Sebastian offers a great example of the potential of combining DuPont Corian® and DuPont Zodiaq®, in both technical and aesthetical terms. We are confident that the innovative concepts and details designed by John Sebastian will prove to be a further powerful source of inspiration." John Sebastian has worked with DuPont Corian® in the past, developing in 2007 the elegant "Leaf" tray for the 40th Anniversary exhibition for Corian® and the "Verve chair" for a show at the Milan Bang & Olufsen store, during the 2008 Milan week of design. "The unique design flexibility, the formability and the visual lightness of DuPont Corian® enabled me to turn the kitchen shape I was thinking about into reality. DuPont Zodiaq® I have used in a more three-dimensional way, to create a different kind of countertop. I think the soft, white, sensual matt finish of the surfaces in DuPont Corian® combines very well with the cool, black, shiny surface of the worktop in DuPont Zodiaq®." concludes John Sebastian. The kitchen is fabricated using DuPont Corian® (in the 12mm thickness Glacier White colour choice), adopting advanced CNC machinery and thermoforming techniques.
